Work was executed by party-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation

Union Minister Vijay Goel on Tuesday demanded an inquiry into the delay in the completion of the Rani Jhansi Flyover project executed by the BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

The 1.6-km-long flyover, from near St. Stephens Hospital to Filmistan Cinema, which was originally scheduled to be completed by 2010, was inaugurated by Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan here on Tuesday. “There should be an inquiry as to why there has been so much delay in completing the project of Rani Jhansi Flyover,” Mr. Goel said.

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari is also in favour of such an investigation, party sources said.

While addressing a gathering at the event, the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that the project, whose foundation stone was laid in 2008, was to be completed in two years, but it took 10 years to complete.

‘Prepare report’

“A report should be prepared [in this regard],” Mr. Goel said, adding that 43% of the work was completed in the last one year [2017], but as to why the remaining work took so much time.

Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP chief accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of intending to “take the Capital back 20 years” and “destroying it” by withholding approval for phase IV of the Delhi Metro.

“For the first time, I have seen politicians having an inclination to harm people…Kejriwal is sitting over the file of Metro extension since 2015, and taking back Delhi by 20 years…Delhi wants and needs further connection with the Metro… but Arvind Kejriwal has not approved it,” Mr. Tiwari alleged.

If Phase IV of the Delhi Metro was not approved within a week, then the machinery hired for the construction of the proposed network, Mr. Tiwari said, would have to be returned and it could take up to four years to bring these back at extra cost.

“Why are you obstinate? Why have you become the enemy of the people? They have elected you, why have you become a hindrance in the development of Delhi... How can a Chief Minister become so merciless, destructive?” Mr. Tiwari questioned.
