More garbage collection delays for Canberrans

Canberrans are being warned yet again to expect more delays for rubbish collection, just a week after bins were left untouched.

Initially forecasted to return back to schedule on Monday, the government said there were further disruptions to household rubbish collections this week, with some suburbs to have a 24-hour delay.

Suburbs expected to be affected include Forde, Holt, Lyneham, Coombs and Wright.

It came after drivers from the ACT government's waste collection contractor Suez refused to complete the shift because of concerns their vehicles were hundreds of kilograms overweight, in breach of national safety standards.

The government advises residents with wheelie bins to continue to put their bins out on the scheduled day and for residents living in multi-unit developments to contact their building manager to see if hoppers are full.

As reported last week, the Transport Workers Union ACT-branch said testing showed some trucks were carrying more than 6700 kilograms during shifts, about 700 kilograms above national limits.

"As advised last week, works have been carried out on the Suez fleet to ensure compliance with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator requirements," a government spokesman said.

"As a result the trucks are currently transporting less weight. This means additional trips are being undertaken between residences and the Mugga Lane precinct."

The government says additional Suez trucks that have been sourced from Sydney are expected to be in the field within the next week to bring collections back on regular schedules.
