LUDHIANA: A 32-year-old man was killed after a car rear-ended his scooter on National Highway-44 on Tuesday morning.
Madan Lal, a resident of Priya Colony in Bajda, was on way home from Phillaur when the speeding car ran into his vehicle. The crash tossed Lal, who was not wearing a helmet, about 6 feet up into the air before he fell on the car’s bonnet.
Lal’s nephew Manpreet Singh said, “My uncle had gone to Phillaur to meet his sister. The accident took place when he was near Kailash Chowk of Jodhewal around 7.30am. As he fell on the car’s bonnet, his head hit against its windshield.”
Passersby took an injured Lal, a supervisor at a hosiery factory, to Christian Medical College and Hospital and called up the police. Lal, however, succumbed during treatment.
Assistant sub-inspector Surinder Pal said, “Lal was not wearing a helmet. The car driver — Gagandeep Singh, 45, a resident of Mohali — was trying to escape when passersby caught hold of him and sounded the police.”
The police have arrested Singh under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
Lal is survived by his wife and two children, aged 12 and 9. The National Highway-44 links the city to Jalandhar.
