Jamaat backs agitators

The Muslim jamaat of Erumely that controls the Vavar mosque, where Ayyappa devotees offer prayers before proceeding to Sabarimala, has offered tacit support to the agitation of devotees.

P.H. Shajahan, president of the jamaat, said its representatives attended a family meeting convened by the Puthenveedu family at Erumely on Tuesday regarding the agitation for protection of the temple rituals.

‘On invitation’

They also attended a meeting convened by P.C. George, MLA. However, they kept off a prayer meeting of women organised by Sree Dharmasastha Temple, Erumely, on Wednesday as they were not invited to the meeting. “We will attend the future meetings on invitation. We will not attend the meetings convened by political parties or organisations that hamper communal harmony,” Mr. Shajahan said.

“We are with the temple worshippers regarding the protection of their faith and rituals. The jamaat is of the view that the temple rituals should be protected and not be altered at any cost. We are hopeful that an amicable solution will evolve soon,” he said.
