Rescue operation under way after trench collapses on Perth worker
An operation is under way to retrieve a worker believed to have drowned at a job site in Perth's western suburbs.
Emergency services were called to the Badge Construction site on Harvey Street just after 2.30pm following reports a worker had fallen down a trench at the site.
It's understood he fell into around three metres of water, and the trench collapsed. The worker is believed to have drowned.
An urban search-and-rescue team is on scene and firefighters are also helping to retrieve the man.
Attempts are being made to pump water from the trench. It's not yet known how the man became trapped.
A Badge Construction spokesman said personnel were currently working to understand the circumstances around the tragedy, and thoughts and prayers were with the man and his family.
The CMFEU also have a safety officer currently on site.
Nearby shopping precinct Mosman Park Shopping Centre is currently in lockdown as emergency services navigate the street.
The news comes just a day after a WA tree-lopper died on the job after falling from his cherry-picker while working south of Perth.
Police said it appeared the man was working at height in a cherry-picker on Nanga Road when he was struck by a large section of a tree, causing him and cherry picker to fall to the ground.
A Worksafe spokeswoman said inspectors would investigate the incident.
Another man also died while working at a Mount Lawley worksite last week.
WAtoday understands St John Ambulance and police were called to the worksite last Thursday following an altercation involving the 68-year-old man.
It was determined he required urgent medical assistance due to a serious head injury and he was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he later died from injuries.
It’s understood Worksafe are not investigating.
More to come.
