NEW DELHI: Hasin Jahan, estranged wife of cricketer Mohammed Shami, joined the Congress on Tuesday in Mumbai.

She joined the Congress in the presence of party's Mumbai president Sanjay Nirupam. The Mumbai Congress posted pictures of Nirupam welcoming Jahan into the party fold, on its Twitter account.

Jahan, a model, was earlier in news after she accused Shami of infidelity, domestic violence and marital rape. In March this year, she had lodged a police complaint against her husband.

However, Shami had denied all the accusations levelled against him by his wife, through he had faced intense scrutiny by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). But following an investigation by the BCCI, the 28-year-old cricketer was finally given a central contract.

Her charges had resulted in the cricketer allegedly cutting her off financially and leaving the city. Thereafter, she had moved court demanding Rs 10 lakh per month as maintenance from her husband.

A professional model and a former cheerleader for Kolkata Knight Riders, Jahan had quit modelling after marrying Shami in 2014. However, Jahan is now back to modelling to support herself.
