Shark warning for beaches south of Perth
A shark advice warning has been issued for beaches near Preston Beach south of Perth after a whale carcass was spotted.
Parks and Wildlife Service officers spotted the carcass 1.9 km south of Preston Beach in the Shire of Waroona at 3.40pm on Tuesday afternoon.
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development officers warned the decomposing carcass could act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore near this stretch of coast.
They said while it was not uncommon for sharks to be present off the WA coast throughout the year, people should exercise additional caution until the whale carcass was removed.
Fisheries officers, along with Waroona staff were monitoring the situation and providing advice to relevant authorities.
Anyone near Preston Beach should adhere to beach closures advised by shire rangers or Surf Life Saving WA.
Anyone who spots a shark can report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.
