Japan to be showcased in Shillong cherry blossom festival

Japanese culture and cuisine will be showcased in this year's Indian International Festival to be held in from November 14 to 17, Chief Minister Conrad said on Tuesday.

In his address to the media here, said there will be an exposition of Japanese cultural events and cuisine at the International Festival 2018 as the Embassy of Japan in has come in as a strategic partner.

Unlike the cherry fruit, the tree, when it flowers -- just for a short period in a year -- the pink and white glory it exudes is a sight to behold.

The cherry blossom festival is also unique in the sense that, while in other countries the cherry trees flower in March-June, here these blossom in November.

Dinabandhu Sahoo, of the Imphal, Manipur-based and Sustainable Development (IBSD) which helps organise the festival, said the event generates huge employment and revenues in cities across the world.

"In alone, the festival typically brings more than 1.5 million visitors and brings in $400 million in revenues every year," Sahoo said.

He also mentioned that 2017, which was held in Shillong to mark the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, attracted more than one lakh visitors and boosted the local economy by 300 per cent.

2018 will celebrate the unique mass flowering of autumn cherry blossoms with several cultural events in Shillong, a statement issued by the organisers said.

Visitors can enjoy fashion shows, rock concerts, a beauty pageant and even compete in an amateur golf tournament.
