A man who punched a 90-year-old great-grandmother as she withdrew her pension from an ATM has blamed 'evil spirits' for his violent rampage.  

Troy Andrew Sergent, 36, stuck the elderly woman in the face as she withdrew money from the Commonwealth Bank machine at a retail park in Perth.

The nonagenarian, called Carmen, required five stitches after being knocked to the ground.

Sergent was arrested the next day and then taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he also punched a male nurse in the face - breaking his nose.

The 36-year-old pleaded guilty to charges for both incidents at Fremantle Magistrates' Court, on Monday.

But he said he had no intention of hurting the 90-year-old and was trying to fight off the 'spirits'.

Speaking to Channel 7 after the hearing, Sergent said he was 'unwell' at the time but was 'sorry for what happened'.

In the same suburb where the first attack happened, two men wearing balaclavas broke into a pub on September 1.

Police said they threatened a staff member with a knife before making off with cash.
