NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Kaplan Educational Foundation (KEF) announced today that the leading book on the college transfer process, Your Guide to College Transfer, will receive both a second edition and an instructor’s edition to better help transfer students, their parents, and advisors navigate the complexities of transferring to a new college or university. Both editions are available starting today.
Transfer is a fact of life for college students, with 37% transferring at least once within six years. Among community college students in particular, 81% aspire to earn a bachelor’s degree, but only 33% actually transfer to four-year schools, often due to a lack of information or resources.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural edition, the second edition of the book, Your 2019 Guide to College Transfer, includes:
- 100+ in-depth profiles of top transfer schools around the United States
- Advice on choosing the right school and overcoming the “myths of transfer”
- How-to guides for excelling on applications, essays, interviews, letters of recommendation, and more
- Information on how to save money on fees, get the best financial aid packages, and transfer the most credits
- Specialized advice for non-traditional students, including veterans, students raising children, and students with DACA or undocumented status
- All new for the second edition: profiles and advice about online bachelor’s program options
"The Kaplan Educational Foundation created the go-to guide for high-achieving students planning their transfer pathway. As selective four-year schools increasingly recognize community college talent, it is essential that prospective students understand their options regarding admissions, housing, and financial aid,” said Giuseppe Basili, Executive Director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. “This second edition has been updated cover-to-cover to provide timely resources to students, whether they are navigating the process on their own or with the support of a campus advisor."
In addition to the second edition, KEF also announced the publication of a version for teachers, guidance counselors, and advisors: Your Guide to College Transfer: Instructor's Edition. The Instructor’s Edition includes lesson plans, worksheets, vocabulary exercises, and discussion questions to help students get into their best-fit schools, obtain the best financial aid packages, and succeed at their transfer school.
“Seeing how last year’s Guide helped students transfer into the schools of their dreams, we’re excited to expand our advice and research this year into the online arena and supplement it with instructional materials,” said Nancy Lee Sánchez, Executive Director of the Kaplan Educational Foundation and author of the Your Guide to College Transfer series. “We realized we could help even more students by including online bachelor’s programs, which can be ideal for non-traditional students who need flexibility in their journeys through higher education, and resources for instructors and advisors, who often aren’t equipped for the special needs of the transfer population.”
Sánchez has over 19 years of expertise providing greater access to higher education, improving the college experience, and supporting leadership among low-income, underrepresented, and non-traditional students. Her own educational journey started at Kingsborough Community College, where she earned her associate’s degree in early childhood education. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Long Island University and master’s in sociology from Brooklyn College. As a National Hispanic Executive Leadership Fellow, she completed Harvard University’s Executive Leadership Program. She has been recognized with the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students "Catalyst Award and the City & State Corporate Social Responsibility Award, and has been featured as an expert in transfer education on PBS, MarketWatch, Forbes, Sirius XM, and more.
KEF helps high-achieving community college students from underrepresented communities successfully transfer to top colleges and universities such as Brown, Stanford, Syracuse, Emory, Mount Holyoke, New York University, Amherst, Cornell, and others. Through a combination of financial support and wraparound counseling, tutoring, and support services, Kaplan Leadership Scholars attain remarkable outcomes. 85% earn an associate’s degree and 87% go on to transfer to a four-year college and earn a bachelor’s degree. All KEF alumni are either employed in their field of study or currently enrolled in graduate school.
