Audi e-tron Offers Electrifying Dynamics, Unmatched AWD

The electric all-wheel drive is second to none, so says Audi.

As we all know, all-electric all-wheel-drive powertrains are the best and even leave state-of-the-art ICE powertrains far in the dust in terms of performance, precision and even driving pleasure.

Audi equipped its e-tron model with two electric motors – one per axle – and torque vectoring systems so that the overall driving experience on different terrain would receive very positive feedback.

“With driving dynamics tests on Namibia’s salt flats and savanna, the Audi e-tron prototype is at present impressively demonstrating its handling qualities. All made possible thanks to a new generation of the quattro drive – the electric all-wheel drive. In conjunction with the versatile suspension, its low center of gravity and the powerful electric motors, the electric SUV offers powerful traction, outstanding dynamics and unshakable stability on disparate terrain.”

Audi e-tron specs:

  • 0-60 mph – 5.5 seconds
  • Top speed – 124 mph
  • over 400 km (250 miles) expected under WLTP test cycle
  • 95 kWh battery (36 cell modules, each module is equipped with 12 pouch cells, nominal voltage of 396 volts)
  • battery pack weight: 700 kilograms (1543.2 lb)
  • dual-motor all-wheel drive – up to 300 kW and 664 Nm in S mode (boost) or up to 265 kW and 561 Nm in D mode. Front motor is 135 kW, the rear is 165 kW (S mode).
  • Maximum tow rating – 4,000 pounds when properly equipped
  • 9.6 kW on-board charger (240 V, 40 A) in U.S. and 11 kW or 22 kW three-phase in Europe
  • DC fast charging up to 150 kW: 0-80% in 30 minutes

Another Euro point of view
Four wheel drive is apparently a real advantage on electric cars as opposed to ICE cars. When buying my last car I was reluctant to buy a quattro system on a Audi as 1/ it seemed a hugely complicated system that could prove problematic (unreliable) in high mileages 2/ it was a pretty heavy system 3/ makes your car sip a bit more fuel (except perhaps on the new “ultra” system quattro). On top of that it takes some place, transmission tunnel etc. With electric cars, none of those problems, on the contrary it can use less kW as using several electric motors can be used to have a higher gear ratio on one of them to use one highways, as I understood it at least. A little more range (+30%) , more fast charging stations at a even higher charging rate (200 kWh) and a 20% price reduction and I may consider an EV after my good old A6 TDI. The problem with changing a TDI engines for an EV is that those modern TDI are 1/ very quiet 2/ have huge low rev. torque so +/- already enjoying EV driving 3/ makes you forget you need to pass… Read more »

I would agree that diesel is probably the best thing going were it not for electrification. You probably won’t find a bunch of folks that get behind diesel at this site, though. What’s left out of your diesel plug is the highly cancerous emissions they produce. That fact can’t be changed regardless of how efficient diesel becomes.

Audi’s turbo motor and automatic transmissions are their week link. Quattro system will out last the car in my experience.

Would love to see an I-Pace vs e-tron …….. I’m not so sure the AWD system of the e-tron is unmatched.

Another Euro point of view

Indeed but what is probably a bit sad with that transition to EVs is that in average the car manufacturers with the highest R&D budget will probably benefit more from it than smaller ones like Jaguar. I would not be surprised to see that appearing in the software the Audi will be equipped with, to be likely a bit more advanced than the one from Jaguar i-pace. For AWD system I have no opinion, Jaguar with its sister company Land rover should be very good as well.

The smaller ones like Jag have the advantage of R&D “Welfare.” Companies like Tesla do all the R&D heavy lifting, a rising tide lifts all boats. In fact, most manufacturers of all sizes have sat back and let Tesla break trail in terms of EV development, autonomous technology, and battery advancements. As long as Tesla keeps tackling the tough challenges, companies like Jag will benefit. Keep in mind, Tesla is still considered a small company, too. They just chose to grow in the EV space. Don’t forget- 12 years ago Jag was larger than Tesla.

Agreed but Tesla compensates the rather modest R&D budget (as compared to VW group for ex.) by the fact they are specialized in EVs (so do not need to spread the R&D budget among gaz, diesel, EV, hybrids etc) and has a 10 years lead time.

the iPace doesn’t allow the amount of slip at the rear and only very small yaw angles. On a rally track the Audi should have the upper hand. The IPace surely will outclimb and descend the quattro since it comes with much larger ground clearance an very little overhang.

Considering what ‘Track Mode” did for the model 3, I would not count out the I-Pace if they can do the needed software.

I doubt i-peace will be a match for the Audi except in price.
I really can’t tell specifically about the i-pace, but Jaguar cars are far from exciting… the old ones were very good looking, now not even that… subjective.
