Five thrashed for playing 'bhajans'

MOHALI: A group of youths allegedly thrashed five persons for playing devotional songs in Zirakpur on Saturday night.
The incident took place at 7pm in Victoria city society, Zirakpur. Some unknown men thrashed 5 Victoria Society residents over playing devotional songs continously during a Navratra program held in the society.
The victims have been identified as Sanjey Kumar (36), his wife Seeta Devi (35), Umesh Yadav (40), Anuj Sinha (35) and Rahul (15). Sanjey Kumar and Umesh Yadav were referred to GMCH 32, Chandigarh, and are under treatment. A case was registered at the Zirakpur police station and police have started investigation into the case. However, no arrest have been made so far.
As per the victims, at 7pm, a group of people allegedly assaulted them with stick and sharp-edged weapons. The victims in their complaint said that they were playing devotional songs during Navratra program held in their society.
However some youths, who alived in the society had problem with that. Sanjey said that few of them came to them and asked to stop playing the songs as the volume disturbed them.
However, the accused refused to stop playing the song. Later, the youths arrived at the society with group of around 20 people and allegedly assaulted them.
Zirakpur SHO, Sukhwinder Singh, said they have registered a case under relevant Sections of the IPC at Zirakpur police station.
He said, "The accused thrashed the victim over an issue after argument." However, he denied about the issue of playing devotional songs. He said, "Victims haven't tell us about this issue in the statement."
