MOHALI: A woman posing as health worker kidnapped a 15-day-old male child from Balongi on Monday morning on the pretext of giving him polio vaccine. The crime was caught on tape.
Around 11am, the veiled woman came to the baby's house and told his parents that they could collect a big cash incentive from the government upon bringing the infant to the village gurdwara for immunisation. The gullible parents-Barkha and Kasim-believed her and they went to the gurdwara, where she tricked them and took away the boy, Kasif. The Jharkand couple lives in a rented house at Balongi's Azad Nagar locality for the past one year. Kasim claims that he shifted to the village 14 months ago after his marriage. He said: "The woman who took away my child had come to my house eight days ago first, posing as a health worker tasked with administering polio-vaccine drops to all children under the age of 5 under a government programme."
Will trace baby lifter, say police
Kasim further said that, "On Monday, she came to my house again and lured my wife and I to the gurdwara, where she asked us to wait at the gate. She came out a few minutes later and told us to go home, claiming that her senior, who was to administer the drops to the child had got late for certain reasons.”
The father says as he went to his work, the woman returned to his house an hour later and took his wife along back to the gurudwara, where she took the child from her on the pretext of taking some pictures of him for the campaign poster.
“She disappeared into a corner and never came back,” Kasim said. Balongi station house officer (SHO) Manphul Singh said that: “We have been able to identify the kidnapper in the footage from a security camera installed near the gurudwara. We are confident of being able to trace her very soon .”
