Housing societies will need to keep residents’ records

Surat: Police will be starting a drive ‘Safe Home Safe Street’ in the city to create awareness on preventing crimes against minor children. In the recent past, several minor girls were raped and two also murdered in the city.

Police want to sensitize people, particularly parents, on the need and methodology for ensuring protection of their children. “We have planned a drive to prevent sexual assaults on minors after repeated such incidents. Police will take help of self help groups, NGOs and residential societies to reach out to maximum people,” city police commissioner Satish Sharma told TOI.

Police will make it compulsory for residential societies to maintain a detailed record of residents. At present, it is mandatory only for landlords to submit details about their tenants with photos to local police stations.

“We are trying to create awareness among parents so that they never leave their children unattended. Residential societies should have common playing areas where a watch can be kept on suspicious elements,” Sharma added.
