A man was hospitalised after police allegedly shot him with a rubber bullet during a protest in Stutterheim near East London in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.

An estimated 100 community members took to the streets to protest against unemployment.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa said that three Amahlathi municipal buildings had been burned down in the process.

"Police shot rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. One male was shot and taken to hospital for treatment."

The case had since been transferred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for investigation.
