Tirupur: Two youths were arrested for allegedly harassing a 21-year-old woman when she was returning home on a scooter near Thekkalur in the district on Monday.
Police identified the accused as Veluchamy and Vinoth Kumar, of Samathuvapuram near Thekkalur.

A police officer from Avinashi station said, “On Monday night, the duo waylaid S Nirmala Devi of Thekkalur while she was returning from work at Karumathampatti in Coimbatore district.”

When the duo asked her where she was going, Nirmala refused to answer them. Suddenly, one of the accused slapped her and tried to pull her off the scooter, said the police officer.

“Devi phoned her father and informed him. He reached the spot and rescued her,” said the officer. Later, the victim lodged a complaint with the Avinashi police. Since she is a dalit, police registered a case under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (prevention of atrocities) Amendment Act, 2015, and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act.

The accused were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
