CHENNAI: Two men died after entering a closed well in Perungudi on Monday afternoon.
The well, located behind a house, was kept closed for months, police said. The victims — identified as Kumar, 45, and Arumugham, 52 — had gone to clean the well.
According to police, the two ran a small roadside shop in Velachery and cleaned wells. On Monday, Lakshmanan, 55, owner of the house contacted them. He had been away for a few months.
Police said the well was 24-foot deep and had a diameter of 5 ft. As soon as Kumar and Arumugham entered it, they collapsed. Despite calls from the house owner, they did not respond.
A frightened Lakshmanan informed police and fire and rescue services personnel. Personnel from the Thoraipakkam police station reached to the spot but kept away from the well as poisonous gases were emanating from it.
Fire services personnel used the self-contained breathing apparatus to enter the well and retrieved the bodies.
Police booked Lakshmanan, a tailor, under Section 304(A) for the deaths. Police said they could not pinpoint the identity of Kumar, except that he had a tattoo on one of his arms.
