A 26-year-old died after he shot himself in front of his female friend after she refused to marry him in south-west Delhi’s Kapashera on October 13, the police said on Sunday.
The deceased, Deepak Gujjar, worked as a delivery boy with an online food service company. The woman had turned down his proposal due to his habit of consuming alcohol on a regular basis, said the police.
“The police control room received a call at 6.50 p.m. about a man who had shot himself. A team from the local police station reached the spot and rushed Deepak to AIIMS trauma centre where doctors declared him brought dead,” said DCP (South-West) Devender Arya.
The police said that Deepak was upset as the woman had been ignoring him since the last few days.
To know the reason behind her behaviour, he went to her house on October 13 evening. Deepak was carrying a countrymade pistol with him.
The woman, who works as a lab technician, and her mother were home at the time of the incident.
“Deepak asked the woman why she had been ignoring him. She told him that she would marry him only if he quits his drinking habit. The conversation turned into an argument. Deepak then took out the pistol that he was carrying and shot himself in the head,” said a police officer.
During investigation, it was found that Deepak was a habitual drinker.
‘Close, old friends’
The police also said that Deepak and the woman had known each other since their schooldays, adding that the two were very close friends. Deepak is survived by his mother and two siblings, they added.
