Classic Legends Pvt. Ltd, an Indian company formed in 2015 and backed by Anand Mahindra, Boman Irani and Anupam Thareja is gearing up to launch a range of all-new Jawa Motorcycles in the country and they have recently divulged all the details regarding the engine that will power these bikes.
As a tribute to the original Jawa engine, new engine carries forward that retro look and has that classic Jawa DNA. It is touted to be free revving, smooth and boasts of a flat torque curve and a generous mid-range. The engine displays 293cc and is a liquid cooled, single cylinder unit that churns out 27 bhp and 28 Nm of torque. Incidentally, this engine is BS VI compliant.
Classic Legends has worked with one of the world’s leading engine specialists based in Varese, Italy to build this engine. After all, like the Jawa Motorcycles of the past, this engine also needs to last a lifetime and that is quite a reputation to live up to, so ensuring that it is engineered right was paramount. The other element that the company has given a lot of attention to is the exhaust note. The old 2-stroke Jawas had a very distinct sound and replicating that with a 4-stroke is nearly impossible, so the team set out to work on numerous combinations to achieve a unique sound that is worthy of the new motorcycles.
Now all that remains to be seen is the motorcycle! Judging by the work that has gone into re-creating the magic of the iconic Jawa engine with a modern twist, we hope that the bike carries that same distinct flavour forward as well.
