Mystery shrouds the death of a six-month-old girl child in Ariyalur district whose body was exhumed on Saturday and sent for post mortem as part of the investigation. The incident occurred at Kaduvetti village in Ariyalur district where the girl child was buried.

The Meensuritti police has launched a probe into the death of the child named Jegadeesha. This was based on a complaint preferred by Block Medical Officer Lakshmidharan in which the latter had raised suspicion over the death.

The child was born to Manikandan - a mason- and Anuradha. The couple already have a two-year-daughter. Police sources said there was some domestic tiff between the couple. Following a wordy quarrel between the couple, Anuradha reportedly went out of the house taking her elder daughter with her on October 9 leaving behind the younger one in the house.

After the woman returned home some time later, she found that the girl baby had died, said the police. The body of the baby was buried without the knowledge of the police. The incident came to light through a village health nurse who keeps regular tab on administering vaccine to the baby at periodic intervals.

The village health nurse informed the Block Medical Officer who in turn lodged a complaint with the Meensuritti police stating that he had some suspicion over the death of the baby.

Acting on the complaint, the Meensuritti Police got the body of the child exhumed on Saturday and have sent it to the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital at Tiruchi for a post mortem. A case under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been registered.
