ROME—Pope Francis declared the late Archbishop Oscar Romero a saint, bestowing Catholicism’s highest honor on a hero to many Latin Americans and progressive members of the church, following years of resistance from influential conservatives.

Archbishop Romero “left the security of the world, even his own safety, in order to give his life according to the Gospel, close to the poor and to his people,” the pope said in his homily.
