LUCKNOW: A group of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) students in an inebriated state assaulted a canteen worker after he refused to cook fritters for them late Friday night.
The students vandalised canteen property and created ruckus for over an hour. By the time the proctorial board and police reached, the students had fled. The incident took place at around 2am when a group of students consumed alcohol near the boys’ hostel and went to the university canteen. They asked the canteen worker to cook fritters for them but when he refused, they began hitting him with cold drink bottles and chairs in the cafeteria.

Hostel inmates woke up due to the noise and called the police and alerted proctor.

“We saw the drunk students thrashing a canteen worker. They also broke window panes with chairs. We alerted the university officials and called police,” said a hosteller not willing to be named.

“The canteen worker has submitted a complaint to the proctor. The proctorial board has identified 10 students from the videos made by other canteen workers,” said Proctor Prof Ramchandra. An FIR will be lodged against the identified students after a probe, he said. Among the identified, many are residing illegally in the hostel, he added.

BBAU had to close down the canteen last year when canteen workers complained that students misbehaved, did not make payments and vandalised the canteen often.

Two weeks ago, the hostel students had also created ruckus by trying to stop Vishwakarma Puja.
