For $78k, You Can Get This Low-Mileage 2002 BMW M5 – Or A New M3 Sedan

While low-mileage E39 BMW M5s don’t exactly grow on trees, this 2002 Imola Red example is selling on eBay for the same price as a brand new 2019 M4 Convertible.

The car has 9,154 miles (14,731 km) on the clock, an Imola Red bodywork and a two-tone grey leather interior and, according to the seller, it’s been looked after meticulously. The ad even states that you would be hard pressed to find an E39 M5 in this condition.

While that may very well be true, the asking price is quite steep, especially when you consider how many other cars you could purchase for $77,900, many of which would be brand new and faster than this E39.

Of course, this car is by no means a slouch. Powering it is a 4.9-liter V8 producing 400 PS (394 HP) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, channeled towards the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. Even though at its core this is a family sedan, in M5 guise the E39 is definitely a driver’s car.

All things considered, this may very well be the cleanest E39 M5 we’ve ever seen. The exterior looks mint and the cabin, at least from the pictures, as good as new. Yet, we can’t help but circle back to the near $78,000 asking price.

Would you spend this much on it, or simply just purchase something newer, faster and even more fun to drive? And if a new BMW M3 sedan with $12,000 worth of extras doesn’t sound as good, then we’ll just mention that a brand new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS, for example, is around $80,000. Just saying…
