Divya Chaitanya, a centre for meditation and music in Hassan, was abuzz with activity on Sunday. More than a dozen cartoonists from different parts of the State had gathered to draw caricatures to raise funds for flood-relief work in Kodagu and other parts of the State.

Hundreds of people paid ₹100 each for their caricatures. Artists Manohar Acharya, Gujjarappa, V.R.C. Shekar, Naganath, Nanjunda Swamy, Raghupathi Sringeri, Gowri Vellal, and M.V. Shivaram drew the caricatures.

Ashok Harnahalli, former advocate general of the State and chairman of Malnad Technical Education Society, inaugurated the event, by getting a caricature of him drawn by Mr. Gujjarappa.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Harnahalli said drawing cartoons was a powerful way to convey a comment. “Sometimes what cannot be conveyed in many words is easily done through a cartoon. I am happy that noted artists have joined hands to collect funds for the relief works in flood-hit areas,” he said.

150 caricatures

Artist K.T. Shivaprasad opened the exhibition that was organised by Karnataka State Cartoonists’ Association and Rotary Hassan . The artists drew more than 150 caricatures on the day. Some enthusiasts got more than one done. Around ₹15,000 was collected till 4 p.m. on the day.

M.V. Shivaram, cartoonist and organiser of the event, said the amount collected would be handed over to the district administration for relief work.
