PUNE: An assistant sub-inspector posted at the Chikhali police station was suspended on Saturday for making obscene phone calls to a woman under the pretext of helping her in a police complaint.
Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner R K Padmanabhan on Saturday issued the suspension order and also ordered an inquiry against the assistant sub-inspector.

A case has been registered at the police station under the charges of outraging modesty of a woman.

According to the Pimpri Chinchwad police, the woman — who is a local political worker — went to the police station late on Wednesday night to lodge a complaint against her husband, whom she alleged had assaulted her over a domestic issue.

The assistant sub-inspector, who was present in the police chowkey that night, accepted the complaint application of the woman.

The application was written on a piece of paper.

In it, the woman described how her husband had beaten her up over a domestic dispute and how she reached the police chowkey.

The woman also wrote down her cellphone number on the complaint application and returned home.

Soon after this, the assistant sub-inspector started calling her up — first her during the day and later, even late at night hours — on the cellphone number mentioned in the complaint application.

He began to pass lewd comments while speaking to her on the phone.

According to the police, he made over five phone calls to her over the period of three days.

Annoyed with this harassment, the woman approached senior police officers and submitted a complaint after which the action was taken
