As many as 300 cadre of the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) on Friday staged a protest near the Red Cross Junction demanding conservation of water bodies.

Led by the party's Farmers’ Wing secretary Gopalsamy, the members said that their protest was part of the State-wide protest called for by the party president E.R. Eswaran.

The demand was for dredging water bodies, removing encroachments, stopping pollution and completing water projects pending for a long time.

In Coimbatore, the demand was for including River Kowsika and the areas in its vicinity in the Athikadavu-Avinashi scheme, protecting River Noyyal by stopping inflow of sewage and effluents, dredging Achankulam, removing garbage in tanks in Sulur and cleaning the inflow canals, early completion of the Anamalaiaru-Neeraru river linking scheme, increasing the height of the check dams in Chithiraichavadi and removing encroachment on River Noyyal banks. They also sought construction of check dams across River Kumittipathi to divert the water flowing into the Walayar tank.
