Hanut Singh’s creations are no stranger to the red carpet — they have regularly been sported by Hollywood and Bollywood elite, from Meryl Streep to Amy Adams and Shweta Bachchan Nanda to Malaika Arora. And at the 2018 Met Gala, Christian Louboutin sported his prayer bead ‘Mala’ necklace, made of rock crystal, enamel, melon-cut hydra, onyx and diamonds.
Mention this to the jewellery designer, and he brushes it off, saying, “Celebrities are the least interesting part. It is the work itself that is artistic, and has a point of view.” The Delhi-based designer brings his latest, untitled collection to Chennai next week, for a two-day exhibit and sale. Calling it “dynamic and architectural”, he says that this is the “boldest” collection he has done so far.
Singh is a descendant of the Kapurthalas, a royal clan known for commissioning some of the most decadent jewels and artefacts — like an emerald-studded Cartier tiara and a vibrant peacock aigrette, made of gold, diamonds and enamel by Parisian jeweller Mellerio dits Meller. “Everyone’s DNA informs their life. Just as mine informs the way I live and the way I have been brought up, it does influence my work.”
That being said, he has opted for materials quite unconventional to his work in the new line, which primarily consists of earrings. “I have used all sorts of gemstones, ebony wood, abalone shells, Japanese pearls and Russian amber, mixed with precious jewels,” he says, explaining, “I have become bolder as my creative journey has taken me to new realms and streams. While I adore and will always have my classics, I have now dabbled with micropave work, shading and ombre, to give a tactile visual experience as well.”
