'Mummy something just wriggled my house!' Earthquake hits WA overnight
Residents in WA’s great southern have reported windows rattling and houses “swaying” after a 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit overnight, the second earthquake to be felt in the area in a month.
Geoscience Australia recorded the earthquake at a depth of five kilometres near Lake Muir at 12.30am on Saturday morning.
Residents in Albany and Denmark, around 100 kilometres from the epicentre, reported feeling tremors for up to 10 seconds.
Denmark mother Kelly Gadsby said it was unsettling to have her house swaying for the second time in recent weeks.
“My three-year-old daughter woke up and said, ‘Mummy, something just wriggled my house again!’,” she said.
“There isn’t any damage to the house, it is just unsettling feeling as the room shakes, the house feels like it’s swaying and you can hear the ground vibrating.”
Other residents in Albany reported feeling their whole house sway and windows rattle.
Geoscience Australia data showed the earthquake was recorded at stations up to 1,684km away, including at Carlisle station in Perth.
Another earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Walpole on September 16 at a depth of 10 kilometres.
The tremors were felt as far north as Perth.
