Man booked after Facebook friend alleges rape

CHANDIGARH: A Mohali resident was booked here on Friday for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman for several months by promising to marry her.
Sector 68 resident Rohit is yet to be arrested. The case has been registered against him at the women’s police station in Sector 17.
In her complaint submitted at the Chandigarh SSP’s public window on September 4, the 26-year-old woman alleged that she had befriended the accused on Facebook in 2017. When she and the accused became friends by chatting on the website, the duo started meeting each other outside and later fell in love, she alleged.
The woman claimed that the accused promised marry to her soon and raped her in hotels of Sector 22, Shimla and Ambala. She alleged that when the accused proposed to marry her, she told him that her parents had died some time ago and she would not marry him.
Later, accused also introduced her to his parents. The woman alleged that she even became pregnant once, but the accused forced her to take abortion pills. After this episode, she alleged, the accused started ignoring her and stopped picking her phone calls.
When he did not respond, the woman submitted a complaint at the SSP’s public window. Following this, the SSP marked an inquiry to Sarita Roy, incharge of Neelam police post.
After verifying facts and incidents, police got the woman medically examined and registered a case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code against Rohit.
