ASDS Recognizes Top Skin Cancer Screeners in Choose Skin Health Program

Over 29,000 Skin Cancer Screenings Performed Since 2010

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), the largest specialty organization representing dermatologic surgeons, today recognized top volunteer skin cancer screeners from across the nation, who collectively provided more than 5,500 free cancer screenings in their communities in the last year. Top screeners were announced at the 2018 ASDS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Choose Skin Health, in partnership with Neutrogena, is a year-round program that encourages the public to choose healthy, sun-safe behaviors and offers free skin cancer screenings by ASDS member dermatologists. The program advocates for regular sunscreen use and promotes prevention techniques and self-exams. For the fourth consecutive year, Andrew T. Jaffe, MD, of Naples, Florida, is the overall top Choose Skin Health screener for 2018. His practice Riverchase Dermatology, based in southwest Florida – is the program’s top practice for the year. Regional winners include:

Findings of the 2018 screenings include:

• 61 percent had never been to a skin cancer screening.
• 51 percent said they only use SPF protection “sometimes when outside for an extended period of time”; only 18 percent said they use SPF protection daily.
• 22 percent were related to family members who had skin cancer.
• 25 percent had used a tanning bed in their past.
• ASDS members located lesions on the bodies of 78 percent of the patients.
