With every piece of jewellery that Jaipur-based Sonal Sawansukha crafts, she tells a story. A necklace with intricate designs represents the forts of Ajmer; a pair of earrings with real peacock feathers is all about Nature and so on.
The designer recently displayed her collection she calls Jewel Saga, at The Arti Bagdy Jewel And Fashion Collezione - Diwali edition.
A glance at her Instagram page and it becomes obvious that she draws inspiration from Nature be it the intricately designed flowers or the detailing of leaves and creepers in some of her pieces.
“Nature is so vast that one can never run out of ideas. Elements of nature are so diverse and well designed that I have been able to bring out collections on just birds alone,” she says referring to her collection called ‘Birds of Paradise’.
Her designs sparkled at the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week where she presented her jewellery for fashion designer Punit Balana. The highlight of the collection was the classic ruby Jadau earrings sported by the showstopper Radhika Apte. Other stars who wore her collection were Sonal Chauhan, Anupria Goenka and Amruta Khanwilkar.
“The designs that I created for Punit were mostly inspired from the forts of Ajmer and Jaipur. The designswere drawn from the royalty of Rajasthan,” she says.
She says that like it is in the clothing industry, pastels are ruling the colour palette in the jewellery industry as well. “Fashion and jewellery industry are closely related. We have to keep a keen watch on what trends in the fashion industry; and we craft our jewellery complementing that. For instance, if florals and pastels are preferred in clothing, a similar trend is seen in the jewellery segment,” she says.
Sonal says the younger generation is buying jewellery to wear them and not as an investment that could be stored in the locker. This has changed the way jewellery is looked at. “The younger generation is experimental and bold. Be it colours or designs, they are willing to try everything. They are also more inclined towards jewellery, which is light and delicate,” says the designer.
