Great article, To enhance the mantel we gather some additional things to set the mood--we group together all the black accessories we can find such as candlesticks, vases and books with black covers to this we add frightening things like skulls, bats and spiders-and suddenly it looks like a scene from a haunted mansion. We also pull out the holiday garland and apply a few coats of matte black spray paint to it-so now it has a Halloween ready touch. We also string Halloween cobwebs on the lampshades and banister and strategically attach crows. In our house black is the new orange as we cover our jack o lanterns with a coat of black paint. This is truly just the beginning of a delightful sinister setting. And don't forget the drinks-for an extra chill to your beverages add skull-shaped ice cubes.

First of all, thanks for this article and ideas! Now I have tips and plenty of time to turn them into realty. I like #11 and #12. It's not "terrifying" in the Halloween meaning of this word, but warm and cozy. Some bright accents look great. My porch is here. Pumpkins are missing, I will add them soon. I want to buy different shapes and sizes.

Our mantle with pumpkins/squash and a garland of felt acorns and leaves in fall colors (hard to see the garland against the rocks in this photo).
