Pre-dredging survey at Chapora river mouth to deepen navigational channel

PANAJI: The Department of Captain of Ports (CoP) on Thursday issued a notice to mariners warning them that a pre-dredging survey will be conducted at the mouth of river Chapora on October 15 during the day.

Captain of Ports officials said that Vasco-based firm Vaibhavi Dredging would be carrying out a pre-dredging survey across the sand bars at the mouth of river Chapora as part of the process to dredge the river mouth.

The ministry of ports plans to dredge the Chapora river mouth and deepen the navigational channel for fishing vessels. CoP officials said that the depth available for fishing trawlers at the mouth of river Chapora has reduced to 1 meter “causing serious obstruction to the smooth navigation of the fishing trawlers.” Fishing trawlers require a minimum depth of 2.5 metres during low tide.

The department plans to dredge a 700-metre long stretch and a 35-metre wide part of the sandbar to ensure fishing vessels can navigate smoothly.
