Four residents of Munekolala village were arrested for allegedly assaulting a head constable when he tried to intervene in a drunken brawl at Kundalahalli Gate early Thursday morning.
Head Constable Sundar Raj, 56, and Constable Basavaraj were on night patrol when they saw a group of drunk men fighting with a shopkeeper around 2 a.m.
When they intervened, they realised that the group of men had refused to pay for the cigarettes they had bought and were assaulting the shopkeeper. However, when they tried to stop the group, the inebriated men turned on them.
One of the accused allegedly smashed a beer bottle on Sundar Raj’s head. A Hoysala vehicle arrived at the spot after Basavaraj called for reinforcements, and arrested the gang. All four accused — Gautam Reddy, Prashant, Guru Prasad and Suryaprakash who are in their late 20s — were inebriated, said the police.
Sundar Raj was rushed to a private hospital where he is being treated now. He has suffered a head injury and a deep cut on his left ear. Senior HAL cops said that his condition is stable and he is out of danger.
