The start was promising after a sunny start at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla. Put into bat, England  made 92 for two before rain came down and stopped play.Sri Lanka opted to bowl on a dry pitch. Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy got England off to a solid start adding 49 for the opening wicket in quick time. The pair attacked Lasith Malinga upfront as the veteran pacer was taken for 37 runs in five overs.

One wicket brought another for Sri Lanka as the pair was sent back in successive overs.
