NEW DELHI: Mirroring the weakness in global stocks, domestic equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty received severe blows on Thursday, as stocks fell like a pack of ninepins amid non-stop selling in most sectors.

However, the Indian market still remained better off than its Asian peers who sank up to 6 per cent.

Taiwan TSEC 50 Index, Shanghai SE Composite Index and Nikkei 225 plummeted 6 per cent, 5 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively.

On Thursday, the BSE Sensex closed 760 points, or 2.19 per cent, down at 34,001.15, while the NSE Nifty settled 225 points, or 2.16 per cent, lower at 10,234.65.

Midcaps and smallcap fell in sync with the benchmark, with the BSE Midcap index plunging 2.34 per cent and BSE Smallcap index settling with a loss of 1.41 per cent.
