MADURAI
Pointing to the dilapidated condition of buildings of many government schools and anganwadis in the State, a public interest litigation petition was filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday seeking a direction for their repair and reconstruction.
The petitioner, R. Senthil Murugan of Madurai, taking the example of Walajabad Panchayat Union Middle School, said the over 40-year-old building was in a dilapidated condition and it worsened following rain. The petitioner said the villagers had protested against the condition of the building but no action was taken to repair it.
He said in Kadimangalam, Madurai, the ceiling of a government school gave way. The consequences would have been different had it been during class hours, he said.
A Division Bench of Justices M. M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar directed notice to School Education department and adjourned the case.
