Thanjavur fast track mahila court on Wednesday convicted a sexagenarian in the rape of a 11-year-old girl and awarded double life term to him.

According to the prosecution, the victim along with her mother had taken goats for grazing.
Owing to some work, the girl’s mother returned home asking her to look after the goats. Utilising this situation, Ramaiyyan, a farmer of Semmankottai near Orathanadu, took the girl to a secluded place and raped her.
During a subsequent check-up at a hospital, it was diagnosed that the girl had contracted a sexually transmitted disease. Then, the girl narrated the incident to her mother.
Later, a case was registered and Ramaiyyan was arrested. When the case came up for hearing, the mahila court convicted and sentenced Ramaiyyan to double life term and levied a fine of Rs 2,500.
