US and Russian astronauts survive emergency landing

Linda linda nasa says two astronauts from the us and russia will be flown to moscow after surviving an emergency landing today on their way to the international space station.

Pkg nats....(reuters) (track 1) the two-man crew waved goodbye moments before take-off in kazakhstan.

Kansas native nick hague gave a thumbs up for his first space mission.

Nats up....(reuters) and there is lift-off of the soyuz ms10..

(track 2) the us and russian astronauts were on their way to the international space station.

But about two minutes after the launch...cameras captured what looked like an explosion.

Nats....(reuters) there has been an issue with the booster.

(track 3) nasa says the failure of a russian booster rocket a few separation led to what's called "ballistic descent mode" -- subjecting astronauts to nearly seven times the normal force of gravity at one point.

(aptn 4176746 @50 sec) (voice of brandi dean/nasa launch commentator) we are now hearing that they are in communication with the rescue forces on their way to the capsule and that they are in good condition."

(track 4) the capsule made an emergency landing in kazakhstan and the crew received medical checks and are said to be feeling good considering what they went through.

Russia is suspending manned space launches while investigators figure out exactly what went wrong.

On cam tag today's mishap was the first manned launch failure for the russian space program since 1983 when a soyuz (soy-ooze) exploded on the launch pad.

Soviet cosmonauts ejected and landed safely nearby.##
