A policeman, posted in Chennai, shot his 23-year-old girlfriend dead, and then turned the service revolver on himself at Anthiyur village near here on Wednesday.
Police said that Karthivel, 30, a resident of Kattupalayam in Erode, fired two bullets at Saraswathi, a student of a private medical college in Chennai, on the eve of her birthday. He then shot himself.
Saraswathi, along with Karthivel, reached her residence on Wednesday to celebrate her birthday.
“Both were talking inside the room, suddenly gun shots were heard and when her father went to the room, he found both lying in a pool of blood,” said a police officer attached to the Kanjanur police station.
Karthivel got acquainted with Saraswathi while she was pursuing a nursing course in Chennai in 2015. A year later, she began an MBBS course.
The police said that after she got admission, differences surfaced between the two. “Her parents had agreed to the marriage, but we need to find out what the immediate provocation was,” they said.
The police said they were inquiring whether the murder was premeditated as he was carrying his service revolver even though he was not on duty.
