2019 Mazda CX-5 Debuts In Japan With CX-9’s 2.5T Engine, Exclusive Mode Special Edition

Mazda has made a series of revisions to the CX-5 for the 2019MY, which was just unveiled in its home market.

The most important concerns the introduction of a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine. Shared with the CX-9 and Mazda6, it produces 230 PS (227 hp / 169 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque.

Those who still prefer diesels should be glad to hear that the 2.2-liter SkyActiv-D unit is now available with a six-speed manual gearbox, too. This flavor of the SUV will launch in both front- and all-wheel drive configurations.

The updated Mazda CX-5 benefits from the addition of the G-Vectoring Control Plus. Compared to the outgoing version, the upgraded system can use the brakes to improve handling stability at high speeds and during emergency maneuvers, and comes standard on all trim levels of the car.

Mazda’s 2019 CX-9 comes with new driving assistance features and technologies, such as the Nighttime Pedestrian Detection, which has been added to the Advanced Smart City Braking Support. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now part of the Mazda Connect car-connectivity system.

Visual updates include the addition of 17-inch aluminum wheels in a Gray Metallic finish, redesigned climate control panel, switches and dials, and fabric material on the A-pillar in vehicles with normal speakers.

Joining the 2019 CX-9 range in Japan is the Exclusive Mode, a limited edition with 19-inch aluminum wheels that have a Dark Gloss look. Inside, it has Nappa leather, woodgrain trim, 7-inch TFT display in the center of the instrument cluster, and white LEDs, among others.

Mazda is asking between 2,570,400 yen ($22,775/€19,780) and 3,882,600 yen ($34,401/€29,878) for the 2019 CX-9 in Japan, which will go on sale locally, alongside the Exclusive Mode, on November 22.
