HC: Form panel with sportspersons to manage stadium

Nagpur: The Nagpur Bench of Bombay high court (HC) has directed that the committee to manage the divisional sports complex (DSC) at Mankapur must include two sportspersons and a coach.
The bench headed by justices BP Dharmadhikari and MG Giratkar took the decision after weighing in on the complaints of DSC being rented out for non-sporting activities and the damage resulting from it.

Amicus curie advocate Shreerang Bhandarkar had visited DSC and clicked pictures to check the condition of the indoor stadium. Bhandarkar said the court’s directive on the committee has to be complied by next month.

“Before November 11, the appointment of these three has to be done. The honourable court had asked me to verify how much damage, if any, had been done to DSC due to it being rented out for non-sporting events. We found that whatever damage was there, had been rectified. We suggested that if in future the players can be part of the managing committee, then there would be a proper balance,” he said.

The HC agreed to the suggestion and said that two sportspersons and a coach should be included in the committee that handles the administrative part. The DSC’s immediate administrator is the district sports officer, while the topmost authority is the divisional commissioner.

Inside DSC, badminton is a daily feature along with boxing and gymnastics. Basketball competitions are also organized from time to time. The complaint, however, was over the place being rented out for public events, including dance events.

The government, however, stated that they rent it out only for sporting or cultural activities and never for private functions such as marriages or parties etc.
