PMC to spend Rs 2 crore to control stray dog menace

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to spend more than Rs 2 crore to control the menace of stray dogs. The PMC has taken a decision to vaccinate stray dogs, sterilise them and tie their collar with an electronic chip to conduct a census.

On Tuesday, the Standing Committee approved three different proposals worth Rs 2.66 crore for stray dogs. The PMC has allotted work of sterilising stray dogs to Universal Animal Welfare Society (Beed), Blue Cross Society of Pune and Animal Welfare Association of Navi Mumbai. The civic body will give Rs 560 per stray dog for sterilisation. 

Yogesh Mulik, Standing Committee Chairman, said, “We have decided to sterilise stray dogs to control their population and give them anti-rabies vaccine. We will spend Rs 1,398 per dog for sterilisation, census and give anti-rabies vaccine. The civic body has also decided to install CCTV cameras in dog ponds to keep a watch on the sterilisation process.”
