Matriculation high and higher secondary schools from Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram received temporary recognition certificates on Tuesday.
Among the 257 schools that got the certificates were institutions that were given recognition for one year on the condition that they get approval for their building plans.
“We understand that the process will take time for the schools that have been functioning before 2011 and are yet to get approval for their buildings. Taking their representations into consideration, we have granted a one-year approval so that the schools can continue to function smoothly,” said K.A. Sengottaiyan, Minister for School Education.
The move to give one-year recognition for schools has been made following a G.O. issued by the School Education Department dated August 7, which stated that the concerns of private matriculation schools had been taken into consideration.
The Minister said the department was taking efforts to simplify process of obtaining approvals for schools so that over 30 lakh students in private schools are able to continue studying without any hindrance.
As many as 1,183 schools have been given temporary recognition by the School Education department. In the next one week, over 400 schools would be given temporary recognition certificates.
Pradeep Yadav, Principal Secretary, School Education, said schools were expected to ensure that they had good infrastructure for students.
