In the run-up to the upcoming Assembly elections, the Sattupalli Zilla Sadhana Committee, a non-political Joint Action Committee, has resolved to revive the agitation for creation of a separate district with the agricultural hub of Sattupalli as its headquarters, from October 11.
The JAC has decided to launch a relay fast at Ambedkar Centre in Sattupalli town on Thursday, coinciding with the second anniversary of formation of 21 new districts in the State in May 2016. The JAC has spearheaded an agitation two years ago to press for formation of a separate district consisting of the horticultural hub of Aswaraopeta mandal, above political affiliations. However, its demand did not materialise as the State government carved out only Bhadradri-Kothagudem district out of the erstwhile undivided Khammam district, with Kothagudem as its headquarters.
While Sattupalli remained in the erstwhile Khammam district, Aswaraopeta has become part of Bhadradri-Kothagudem district consequent on the reorganisation of the districts two years ago. Ahead of the coming Assembly polls, the JAC has yet again turned the spotlight on the demand for separate Sattupalli district for better administration.
The JAC has decided to meet the top leaders of the main political parties to prevail upon them to incorporate the long standing demand of people of Sattupalli for a separate district in their respective election manifestos.
