Capital saw most road fatalities in India last year

An average of four people lost their lives in road accidents in the Capital every day last year, revealed official data that was released on Tuesday.

Delhi also saw the highest number of fatalities among 50 cities with a population of more than one million.

As many as 1,584 people lost their life in the national Capital in 2017.

The city was followed by Chennai (1,299), Jaipur (813), Kanpur (682) and Lucknow (655), noted a report on road accidents in 2017.

The report was made public by the Ministry for Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday.

The city was at the second spot in terms of total road accidents, behind Chennai.

Tamil Nadu’s capital saw 7,257 accidents, followed by 6,673 road crashes in Delhi.

Indore saw 4,513 mishaps, Jabalpur recorded 3,330 and Hyderabad 2,834.

1.47 lakh lives lost

In 2017, these 50 cities accounted for 17.7% of all road accidents and 11.5% of all road deaths in the country.

A total of 4.64 lakh road accidents were reported last year, which claimed 1.47 lakh lives.

The five cities with lowest road crashes were Amritsar (119), Jodhpur (282), Jamshedpur (304), Chandigarh (342) and Srinagar (363).

The five million-plus cities with the lowest number of road fatalities were Srinagar (60), Amritsar (67), Kannur (68), Kota (93), Jodhpur (104), Thrissur (106).
