Greater Noida: As many as 12 students have been suspended by
Sharda University for their alleged involvement in the protests and violence that rocked its Greater Noida campus last week. Of these 12 students, eight have been asked to explain why they should not be expelled from the university, officials said on Tuesday.
Sharda spokesperson Ajit Kumar said while only two of these eight students are Afghan nationals, the remaining are Indians from different departments of the university.
“All the students have been issued e-mails intimating them about the action taken against them,” he said. The eight students have been served show-cause notices after their direct involvement became visible from the video recordings made by other students and the footage captured by the varsity’s CCTV cameras, the university official added.
These students also include a relative of vigilante Deepak Sharma who had allegedly informed about the fight between the Afghan and Indian students.
These eight students include the two Afghans whowere suspended for allegedly hitting an Indian student, while the remaining six have been identified through the videos. The other four who have been suspended include those who did not depose before the inquiry committee set up by the university to probe the violence. “They have been given two more days to appear before the committee,” the official said.
Moreover, 10 students have been warned and put on probation till completion of their course. These students have been asked to pay Rs. 25,000 as “surety fee” which will stand forfeited in case another act of indiscipline is reported against them.
Ten others have been let off for want of any substantial evidence. A varsity official told TOI that those who have been let off are the ones who can be seen in the video as mute spectators.
Varsity registrar Amal Kumar said more action was likely in the matter. Meanwhile, the “interim report” has been shared with police and the administration.
On Monday, parents of the 38 students who have been charged under sections 107/116 of the CrPC for their alleged involvement in protests were asked to submit an affidavit before the SDM, stating that their children would not indulge in any incident of indiscipline in the future. Meanwhile, the university has also started hiring more bouncers and decided to increase their strength to 150. The move comes the Greater Noida police wrote to the university seeking that they rake up safety measures on their premises.
