Water level in Siruvani Reservoir rose by more than a foot owing to rain on Monday.
Rainfall data from the Coimbatore Corporation showed that in the 24 hours that ended 8 a.m. Tuesday, the Reservoir had recorded 220 mm and the Siruvani foothills 31 mm. This helped the water level go up from 40.02 feet to 41.79 feet. The full reservoir level is 49.50 feet.
The Corporation officials said that since October 6, the Reservoir and the foothills had been receiving good rain, but the rainfall recorded for October 8 was the highest thus far this season.
Aliyar Reservoir, however, did not see as much rainfall. Public Works Department’s Water Resource Organisation sources said that the water level continued to remain at 113.5 feet as against the full reservoir level of 120 feet.
Rainfall recorded in the city showed that Mettupalayam received the maximum rainfall on Tuesday, 72 mm, followed by Chinnakalar 48 mm, Valparai PAP area 43 mm, Valparai Taluk Office 30 mm and Annur 23 mm.
In Tirupur, rain on Monday evening saw water entering more than 200 houses at Mumoorthy Nagar in Boyampalayam.
Tirupur district administration and Tirupur Corporation officials moved the affected residents to a nearby school.
After the residents informed the officials that a family was caught in floods in the area, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the place and rescued two children and a few women.
Kongu Main Road resident Amavasai and his family of six had a narrow escape as he fled the house minutes before the wall and roof collapsed.
Sources said that flash foods near Sevur saw the causeway connecting the area with Kodapalayam submerging and that a few habitats remaining inaccessible. They also said that M.S. Nagar resident Gurumurthy (31), who went to Perumanallur, was struck by lightning and killed when he took shelter under a tree in the area.
Tirupur Collector K.S. Palanisamy called on the affected people from Mumoorthy Nagar.
In the 24-hour period that ended 8 a.m. Tuesday, the rainfall recorded in Tirupur district was: Tirupur 114 mm, Avinashi 75 mm, Palladam 8 mm, Dharapuram 70 mm, Kangayam 10 mm, Moolanur 23 mm and Udumalpet 4 mm.
