Hostel timings: Dialogues fail to yield results\, protesters increase

PATIALA: Numerous meetings between the authorities of Punjabi University and the students — protesting for opening girl’s hostel roundthe-clock — held in the last 20 days have failed to bring any results. Contrary to this, the number of the protesters has only increased.

On Tuesday, too, the university authorities witnessed the anger of the protesters while they were holding a syndicate meeting. The authorities called an emergency meeting on Monday after the protesters had locked the VC office and gheraoed the vice-chancellor, B S Ghuman, university registrar and others in a guest house where the authorities held a meeting with the protesters on Sunday Night. The students did not allow the VC and others to go out of guest house till 3am on Monday.

The VC then held a meeting with deans and heads of teaching and research departments on Monday and passed a resolution against protesters, who will be involved in spreading violence, destroying public property and causing obstruction in the functioning of university officials.

“Everything but the demand to open girls’ hostels round-the-clock has been accepted,” the university officials said.

Notably, the students, including girls, have been protesting since September 18. They had also been allegedly assaulted by some members of another student body.
