South Delhi road opens up\, cop plugs the gap

NEW DELHI: An alert Delhi Police constable helped commuters avert a disaster on Wednesday when around 1pm, he noticed the signs of a cave-in on a busy stretch under south Delhi's Savitri flyover.

With the help of two autorickshaw drivers, Ayub and Rajkumar, constable Vineet Atri tried to restrict the damage by filling up the sinking section with bricks and stones scattered nearby. Atri also informed the area police chowki as well as the public works department (PWD), and stood guard to divert commuters. But the portion soon caved in.

Around 2.15pm, PWD workers reached the spot and the repair was over in 20 minutes. Later, another cave-in occurred beside the Savitri flyover on the road to Chirag Dilli.

A PWD official from the area said that soil under the road surface had eroded due to water seepage. “The area around that specific point was dug up and the pit was filled up with debris. Smooth traffic flow resumed after a while,” he said.

He added, “The road surface will be relaid and we will survey the area to see if there are other weak sub-surfaces are present.”
